Carol Aschenbrener: Making Sense of Competencies, EPAs and Mastery Learning: A Leadership Opportunity for GRIPE

Carol A. Aschenbrener, M.D has been deeply engaged in medical education as an educator, innovator and executive for forty years. She joined the Association of American Medical Centers (AAMC) in April 2004 after nearly 30 years as a medical school faculty member and administrator. She oversaw the medical school accreditation process (LCME) for two years, then spent five years as in the new role of Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, focusing on the implementation of the AAMC’s strategic priorities and alignment of resources to ensure internal coordination of AAMC programs. In 2011 she became the Founding Chief Medical Education Officer at AAMC, with oversight of the continuum of physician education, including Interprofessional Education, MedEdPORTAL and a series of initiatives aimed at leveraging integration of a competency-based framework for the continuum of formation of physicians. She served in that role for 3 years, during which time AAMC launched several major new initiatives, including Education in Pediatrics across the Continuum, the Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency, the model oral health curriculum and the interprofessional education collection in MedEdPORTAL, Pivio, and, in collaboration with the Interprofessional Education Collaborative, biennial faculty development institutes in IPE. She has extensive executive experience including nine years in various Dean’s Office positions at The University of Iowa College of Medicine and four years as Chancellor of the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She has served as a member of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education, the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education, the National Board of Medical Examiners (four years as chair) and the board of the Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates. In addition, she held elected positions on the Iowa Medical Society Board, the AMA Council on Medical Education, and the Group for Research in Pathology Education. Her current professional interests include competency-based learning and assessment, interprofessional education, organizational culture, leadership development, and management of change.
