Apply Today for GRIPE 2020 Awards and Scholarships

GRIPE Banner

Each year, the Group for Research in Pathology Education (GRIPE) accepts submissions for several different awards and scholarships for Pathology educators, students and practitioners. Each award is meant to honor contributions to Pathology in different ways, be it excellence in education, international pathology, residency, photography and longevity. Each award is either judged or awarded at the annual meeting in January of each year, giving award winners an opportunity to attend the meeting to receive their commendation.

GRIPE Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award is designed to recognize an individual’s exceptional lifetime contribution to the mission of GRIPE. Letters to the GRIPE Executive Committee from three GRIPE Members from separate institutions are required to nominate an individual. Letters may also come from outside the GRIPE organization.

John H. Holliman Resident Scholarship
To encourage the support of professional development for pathology educators, GRIPE is again offering the John H. Holliman Resident Scholarship to a pathology resident who is sincerely interested in pursuing undergraduate or graduate teaching of pathology as part of their career planning. The scholarship covers registration expenses (travel and lodging are not included) for the annual GRIPE meeting. The winner will be asked to prepare a poster on a topic of his/her choice and give a 30-minute presentation summarizing the poster at the meeting.

Tom Kent Award for Excellence in Pathology Education
The Tom Kent Award for Excellence in Pathology Education’s emphasis will be on contributions to Pathology education, which will be defined as broadly as possible, and include both undergraduate and graduate programs. The award will recognize the broader category of “education,” rather than just presentation skills, and should recognize a “lifetime” of contributions, rather than something done at any one point in time. The awardee’s contribution to education should be widely recognized, and not simply gratitude for “services to GRIPE”. Anyone who has made a major contribution to Pathology Education will be eligible, whether or not they are GRIPE members. The award will be non-monetary, except that GRIPE will pay some portion of the recipient’s transportation expenses (amount to be determined by the Executive committee) to attend the annual meeting and accept the award.

Excellence in International Pathology Education AwardThe emphasis of the Excellence in International Pathology Education Award will be on contributions to Pathology education globally by enhancing the teaching of Pathology at medical institutions in multiple locations outside of North America. Priority will be given to individuals who expand the teaching of Pathology in areas of limited resources and who are able to demonstrate impact. Candidates should be nominated by a minimum of 3 GRIPE members, each in separate institutions. Letters of support must include testimony of the nominee’s contributions at their medical institution outside of North America. The awardee will be selected from among the nominees by the Executive Committee.
The award will be non-monetary, except that GRIPE will pay some portion of the recipient’s transportation expenses (amount to be determined by the Executive Committee) to attend our annual meeting and accept the award.

While the awardee is not required to be a GRIPE member, candidates should be nominated by at least two members, each at separate institutions. Letters of support must include testimony from at least two of the candidate’s learners. The award will be non-monetary, except that GRIPE may pay some portion of the recipient’s transportation expenses (amount to be determined by the Executive Committee) to attend our annual meeting and accept the award.
